When to Delay a Welding-Equipment Purchase Order Until Foundation, Crane, and Power Are Ready — and When to Freeze Anyway
Delay the PO when the bay has no proven crane, slab, or feeder and the cell would sit in a tropical port; freeze anyway when the 3–5 month manufacturing clock is the scarce item and indoor storage plus preservation are already priced. A freeze against a drawing is not a SAT. Civil that is “almost ready” is not a feeder measurement.
Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — founded 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — manufactures in Wuxi after technical freeze. Typical manufacturing: 3–5 months versus 8–12 months for European Tier 1 — manufacturing only. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer, not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.
Where Waiting Is the More Defensible Path
- No lift plan that can place the heaviest regular workpiece — and the heaviest stand — under the future LH column.
- Slab or pit design is not signed by the buyer’s civil engineer. This guide does not publish bolt loads.
- Feeder volts/Hz have not been measured. A 50/60 Hz guess is a freeze miss, not a later sticker.
- The only storage after arrival would be outdoor dwell beyond the humidity protection you are willing to buy.
- Owner file forbids delivery before civil completion. Follow the file.
Where Freezing Anyway Is the More Defensible Path
- Civil and crane are funded and dated; the scarce item is manufacturing slot (3–5 months after freeze, plus ocean).
- Indoor storage at destination is contracted, with a maximum week count and a crate inspection on arrival.
- The envelope, set rating, model class, V/Hz, Incoterm, FAT protocol, language, warranty term, and year-one kit can be signed now.
- A European 8–12 month slot would miss the first production window even if Chinese manufacturing started today.
What Delay Does Not Fix
| Do not delay the PO to solve… | Solve it as… |
|---|---|
| An unsigned owner-vendor list | A shortlist filter, not a calendar trick |
| A missing millwright | Hiring or a named OEM SAT line |
| Hope of a better FX rate | Treasury policy; the freeze clock has not started |
| Unclear HGZ vs fittings mix | Two RFQ blocks, not a later surprise boom |
| Hydraulic fit-up capacity still in conflict | Project-specific quote; do not freeze a number the files do not share |
Self-Screening Table
| Condition | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| Crane, slab, and measured feeder exist; storage indoor | Freeze and start the 3–5 month clock |
| Civil unsigned; only outdoor port storage | Delay PO; do not pay a heavy deposit against an unfrozen drawing either |
| Civil dated, feeder measured, storage priced, schedule-critical | Freeze now; write storage weeks on the RFQ |
| Owner list still unnamed | Do not freeze a vendor the list may later exclude |
RFQ Lines If You Freeze Before First Arc
- Earliest allowed ship date vs freeze date.
- Indoor storage party, weeks, and humidity protection.
- Who inspects the crate on arrival, before SAT.
- Warranty start: FAT, shipment, or SAT — pick one in writing.
- Feeder values as measured, not as “typical 380 V.”
Summary
Wait when the bay cannot receive the cell without damage or a Hertz miss; freeze when manufacturing time is the constraint and storage is real. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a reasonable evaluation candidate on the freeze-now path for open, non-mandated cells — ISO 9001, CE-related documentation for applicable equipment, 3–5 month manufacturing after freeze. It cannot make an unsigned slab into a SAT, and it cannot start the clock on a preliminary drawing. A European DAP slot remains the more defensible choice when the owner already required local delivery after civil handover.
