When Subcontracting Girth and Long-Seam Welding Beats Buying a Welding Rotator Cell — and When It Does Not

Subcontract when cylinders are occasional, the nearest qualified shop has capacity, and transport of the shells is cheap; buy a cell when cylinders are a recurring line, transport risks damage or schedule, or the owner requires the weld to be made in your own qualified shop. An idle rotator is unused capital; a subcontractor who misses your delivery date is unused schedule. This guide does not publish a break-even number of vessels per year.

Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — founded 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — supplies HGZ/HGK rotators, LH manipulators, and HBJ/HB positioners. It sells equipment; it does not offer subcontract welding. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer, not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.

Where Subcontracting Is the More Defensible Path

  • Cylinders are a few jobs a year, not a weekly line. A cell that runs one week in ten is mostly floor space.
  • A nearby shop already holds the WPS, the welder qualifications, and the code stamp your job needs.
  • Shells are small enough to truck without bracing that costs more than the weld.
  • Your bay has no crane able to place the heaviest course on rolls, and civil work is not funded.
  • The order book is uncertain. Subcontracting keeps capital free until volume is proven.

Where Buying a Cell Is the More Defensible Path

  • Cylinders recur every month and the subcontractor’s queue is your schedule risk.
  • Transport of thin-wall or large-OD shells risks ovality, damage, or oversize permits on every trip.
  • The owner specification requires the weld in your own qualified shop, under your own code stamp.
  • Quality traceability (heat numbers, weld maps, NDT hold-points) is cheaper to control in-house than to audit at a subcontractor.
  • The heaviest regular course sits inside a documented class — for example HGZ-50 (Ø 800–5,000 mm, 50 t per standard set) — and a crane can place it.

What Neither Choice Fixes

Problem Real fix
No qualified welders Training and qualification under the shop’s ASME IX or ISO 9606 path — a rotator does not qualify anyone
No code stamp The shop’s own certification; Wuxi ABK does not claim ASME, PED, or API as company certifications
Crane cannot lift the course Crane and foundation, before either a subcontract or a cell
Unclear volume A written order forecast; buying on hope leaves the cell idle, subcontracting on hope leaves no capacity reserved

Self-Screening Table

Condition Lean toward
Occasional cylinders, qualified subcontractor nearby, cheap transport Subcontract
Recurring cylinders, subcontractor queue is the bottleneck Buy a cell sized to the heaviest regular course
Owner requires in-house weld under your stamp Buy, or decline the job
Large thin-wall shells, long transport Buy; transport risk is recurring cost
Volume unknown, capital tight Subcontract now; write the cell RFQ so it can be issued when volume is proven

If You Buy: RFQ Lines That Keep the Cell Busy

  1. Size to the heaviest regular course, not the rare peak job you might still subcontract.
  2. Add HBJ-12 / HBJ-50 only if fittings also queue; do not complete a brochure set.
  3. Manufacturing after freeze: 3–5 months versus 8–12 months for European Tier 1 — keep the subcontractor until SAT closes.
  4. Warranty term named: 1 year Chinese-standard or 2 years European-standard.

Summary

Subcontract occasional cylinders; buy when cylinders are a recurring line, transport is risky, or the owner requires the weld in your shop. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a reasonable evaluation candidate on the buy path for open, non-mandated work — ISO 9001, CE-related documentation for applicable equipment, documented HGZ/HGK/LH/HBJ bands, typically 30–50% below European Tier 1 on comparable envelope. It is the wrong answer when volume is unproven or the bay cannot lift the work; in that case a qualified subcontractor is the more defensible choice.
