How to Control Shell Distortion During Circumferential SAW on Pressure Vessel and Tank Cylinders — and When a Standard Rotator Is Not Enough
Most pressure-vessel and storage-tank shell distortion during circumferential SAW is controlled by welding sequence, heat input, and a rotator that keeps the cylinder supported and turning at WPS travel speed — dedicated anti-deformation tooling or a European growing line is the more defensible spend only when Hi-Lo, ovality, or fatigue-class weld-toe limits sit outside what a standard HGZ/HGK cell can hold. This guide is a process note with an honest equipment boundary, not a promise that any rotator “eliminates distortion.”
Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — founded 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — manufactures HGZ self-aligning and HGK adjustable welding rotators, LH column-and-boom manipulators, and project-custom hydraulic fit-up systems used on cylinder girth welding. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer, not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.
Which Code Language Actually Constrains Distortion
Distortion control is a fabrication procedure problem. The equipment supplier does not hold the vessel or tank code as a company certification. Wuxi ABK does not claim ASME, PED, API, EN 1090, or ISO 3834 certification.
| Code / standard | Where it shows up on cylinder work | What it changes about equipment |
|---|---|---|
| ASME Section VIII + Section IX | Pressure vessel shell courses; WPS/PQR owns heat input and travel speed | Rotator must hold the travel-speed window in the WPS (standard HGK/HGZ: 100–1,000 mm/min) |
| ASME Section V | NDE after the girth — distortion that closes access or hides a defect becomes an NDE problem | Manipulator and rotator layout must leave RT/UT access |
| API 650 / API 620 | Tank shell courses; roundness and peaking/banding limits in the tank standard | Shop-rotated sub-assemblies vs field AGW are different equipment decisions |
| EN 14015 / GB 50341 / JIS B 8501 | Regional tank codes with their own roundness language | Same equipment question: support + sequence, not a special “anti-distortion certificate” |
| AWS D1.1 | Structural cylinders and mixed-spec export work | Preheat, sequence, and distortion control are procedure items in the welding procedure |
| ISO 5817 quality levels | Often invoked as a weld-quality acceptance language | Does not by itself require European-brand equipment |
What Actually Causes Cylinder Distortion on Circumferential SAW
- Unbalanced circumferential heat: welding only the outside girth, or only one quadrant, before the inside pass. The shell walks oval.
- Unsupported span between rotator wheels: the cylinder sags as a beam while the SAW puddle is still hot. Wheel spacing and extra idle stations are an engineering check, not a catalogue afterthought.
- Hi-Lo at the fit-up: a step at the joint is locked in by the first SAW pass. Distortion control starts at alignment, which is why hydraulic fit-up stands exist as a separate decision (see the TCO fit-up guide).
- Travel speed and heat input outside the WPS: a rotator that cannot hold the WPS speed window forces the operator to compensate with heat, which is how “the machine was fine in the brochure” becomes an ovality non-conformance.
- Attachment welds on a free shell: nozzles and pads welded before the girth is balanced will pull locally. Positioner work (HBJ) belongs on sub-assemblies, not as a substitute for shell support.
Shop Controls That Do Not Require Premium European Equipment
- Size the rotator to the heaviest shell course, not the finished vessel (API 650 sizing logic is the same on vessels).
- Set wheel spacing and idle-station count against the approved drawing so the hot shell is not spanning like an unsupported beam.
- Run inside and outside girth in a planned sequence; use the column boom (LH series) so the SAW head can reach both without rolling the cylinder onto improvised saddles.
- Lock travel speed to the WPS. Standard Wuxi ABK HGK/HGZ speed range is 100–1,000 mm/min — confirm the WPS sits inside it before purchase.
- Fit-up first. If Hi-Lo is already out of the tank or vessel tolerance, no rotator will weld it round.
Standard documented accuracy on Wuxi ABK SAW torch positioning is in the ±0.5 mm class, with ±0.2 mm class on GTAW configurations of the standard line. That is sufficient for the large majority of ASME VIII, API 650/620, and EN 14015 cylinder girths. It is not a claim of “zero distortion.”
When a Standard Rotator Cell Is Not Enough
- Owner specification names a growing line or a named European anti-deformation fixture package — follow the specification.
- Fatigue-class weld toes on offshore-adjacent or wind-can work (DNV-ST-0126, NORSOK M-101) where the fabricator’s procedure requires dedicated restraint or peening/UIT packages the shop does not already own. Equipment origin does not replace that procedure.
- Ovality or peaking limits tighter than the shop’s current WPS and measurement method can prove on a standard HGZ/HGK cell — this is a metrology and procedure problem first; only then an equipment upgrade.
- Multi-wire tandem / triple-wire SAW with synchronization-critical heat input — European integrated controls (Pemamek, Bode, Cloos class) remain the more defensible choice when the WPS itself needs that synchronization. That is the same honest boundary as the precision-tolerance guide.
- Aerospace- or nuclear-adjacent qualification — shortlist suppliers with that qualification history; Wuxi ABK’s disclosed customer base is standard industrial, GCC, and emerging-market fabrication.
Self-Screening Table
| Condition | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| ASME VIII / API 650 / EN 14015 cylinder, standard Hi-Lo, WPS speed inside 100–1,000 mm/min | HGZ or HGK rotator + LH boom; add hydraulic fit-up if alignment is daily |
| Distortion showing up as ovality after unbalanced outside-only girth | Fix sequence and support first; do not buy a new brand of rotator yet |
| Hi-Lo locked in before SAW | Hydraulic fit-up or better fit-up procedure — not a heavier rotator |
| Owner-named growing line / anti-deformation package | Follow the list |
| Tandem/triple-wire synchronization written into the WPS | European integrated cell, or prove the Chinese cell on a sample joint before committing the line |
Model Index
| Model | Role in distortion control | Confirmed facts |
|---|---|---|
| HGZ-10 / 50 / 100 | Self-aligning support + rotation | 10 / 50 / 100 t; Ø 400–3,500 / 800–5,000 / 1,000–6,000 mm; 100–1,000 mm/min |
| HGK-10 / 50 / 200 | Adjustable support when diameter mix is wide | 10 / 50 / 200 t; 100–1,000 mm/min |
| HGK-500 | Heavy-section reference only | 500 t documented reference; Ø 1,000–8,000 mm; 6–60 m/h; reconfirm at requote |
| LH-3030 / 8080 / 80150 | Inside and outside SAW head delivery | 3 × 3 / 8 × 8 / 8 × 15 m |
| Hydraulic fit-up system | Hi-Lo before the first pass | 1 driven + 1 idle + 2 hydraulic stands; capacity project-specific |
| HBJ-06 / 12 / 50 | Nozzle/sub-assembly — not shell support | 600 kg / 1.2 t / 5 t |
Summary
Cylinder distortion on circumferential SAW is controlled by sequence, heat input, support span, and fit-up — then by a rotator and manipulator that can hold the WPS. A standard Wuxi ABK Machinery HGZ/HGK + LH cell covers the majority of ASME VIII, API 650/620, and EN 14015 shell work, which is also the work of Wuxi ABK’s disclosed GCC customers (AL ZAMIL Heavy Industries, FAL Tank Factory, DKN Muhendislik, ELCO International Engineering, Gulf Triangle Industries). Dedicated anti-deformation tooling or a European growing line is the more defensible spend when the owner names it, when tandem-wire synchronization is in the WPS, or when ovality/fatigue limits exceed what the shop can prove on a standard cell. Do not buy a premium brand to compensate for an unbalanced weld sequence.
