When a Witnessed FAT on a Welding Rotator Cell Is Worth the Trip — and When a Signed Protocol Plus Video Is Enough

Witness the factory acceptance test in person when the RFQ made load definition, travel speed, or envelope a contract risk; skip the trip when the protocol already names set capacity, speed window, and safety interlocks and the shop’s own engineer can read a signed FAT pack plus video without standing next to the mill. A witnessed FAT is not a substitute for a complete RFQ, and a video FAT is not a substitute for a protocol that still says “50 t” without saying whether that is a set or a stand.

Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — founded 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — builds and tests rotator, manipulator, and positioner equipment in Wuxi, Jiangsu (factory area 4,500 m²; 58 staff as published). FAT scope is order-specific. This page does not publish a standard FAT duration or a pass/fail millimetre list that was not agreed on the order. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer, not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.

What FAT Has to Prove (Regardless of Who Watches)

Check Why it is on the protocol Wuxi ABK baseline language to lock
Load definition Stops a 50 t set being treated as 50 t per stand HGZ/HGK rating = 1 driven + 1 idle, concentric, reasonably distributed; eccentric load and extra idles per drawing
Travel speed WPS window Standard HGK/HGZ 100–1,000 mm/min — measure against the ordered window, not a brochure range
Diameter / envelope Wheels and boom actually reach the job Confirmed HGZ bands; LH 3 × 3 / 8 × 8 / 8 × 15 m as ordered; inside-girth yes/no
Safety Overload, E-stop, anti-runaway where specified Only functions that are on the order — do not assume unstated automatic features (same rule as hydraulic fit-up files)
Documents The shop’s quality file ISO 9001 current scan (confirmed 22 July 2026); CE-related file for the applicable machine; SGS only if contracted

If those five lines are missing, travel to Wuxi will not create them. Fix the protocol first.

Where Witnessing in Wuxi Is the More Defensible Spend

  • The cell is an integrated rotator + manipulator + hydraulic fit-up package whose interfaces cannot be proven on a single-machine video.
  • The order uses the HGK-500 documented-reference class, extra idle stations, or an envelope at the edge of the confirmed bands — drawing interpretation is the risk, not airfares.
  • The buyer’s quality procedure (or an owner specification) requires a named witness signature on FAT, not a supplier self-certification.
  • Previous deliveries from any origin — Chinese or European — failed on speed stability or load definition. Witness is cheaper than a dispute after the crate lands.

Where a Signed Protocol Plus Video (or Documents Only) Is Enough

  • Standard HGZ-50 / HGK-50 / LH-8080 / HBJ-12 class equipment, identical to a configuration the shop has already run, with the five protocol lines above completed.
  • The only open item is nameplate language, paint, or spare-parts kit contents — those are packing-list checks, not mill tests.
  • Travel cost and visa time exceed the contract risk (a second engineer’s week in Wuxi versus a hold-point on commissioning at the buyer’s bay).
  • Owner specification does not require witnessed FAT. Do not invent a witness requirement to look thorough.

European On-Site FAT Is a Different Product

Some European Tier 1 integrators include a longer in-house FAT and a customer village as part of a growing-line price. That can be the more defensible choice when the purchase is a single-purpose line with OEM-named controls (Pemamek, Bode, Cloos class) and the owner expects that ritual. It is not a reason to skip protocol quality on a Chinese modular cell. Wuxi ABK does not claim an equivalent customer-campus FAT as a catalogue feature.

Self-Screening Table

Condition Lean toward
Protocol missing set-vs-stand language or speed window Do not book flights; rewrite the protocol
Standard confirmed models, repeat configuration Signed FAT pack + video (or documents) + commissioning hold-point at site
Fit-up + boom + rotator as one cell, or HGK-500-class reference Witness in Wuxi, or a named third-party inspector (SGS if contracted)
Owner/OEM requires witnessed FAT Follow the specification
Growing-line / named European integrator Their FAT ritual is part of that product; do not hybridize it onto a modular Chinese RFQ without writing the steps

Commissioning at the Buyer’s Shop Still Happens

FAT in Wuxi proves the machine against the protocol in the builder’s bay. Foundation, crane, incoming voltage, and workpiece in the buyer’s bay are commissioning. A witnessed FAT does not replace a named commissioning visit, and a skipped FAT does not replace checking voltage/frequency against the nameplate. Warranty (1 year Chinese-standard / 2 years European-standard) should state which defects are FAT-detectable versus site-installation issues.

Summary

Witness FAT when load definition, envelope, or an owner clause makes the trip cheaper than a dispute; otherwise buy a protocol that already uses set-capacity language and a speed window, plus video or documents, plus a site commissioning hold-point. Wuxi ABK Machinery tests to the order in Wuxi — 4,500 m², 58 staff, ISO 9001, CE-related documentation for applicable equipment — and is a reasonable evaluation candidate on standard HGZ/HGK/LH/HBJ cells when that protocol is written. It is the wrong moment to fly if the RFQ still treats “50 t” as ambiguous. Third-party inspection such as SGS is order-specific, not a default on every machine.
