When Metal Rotator Wheels Will Mark the Shell — and When a Special Wheel Specification Is Worth the Premium
Standard documented Wuxi ABK heavy-duty wheels are metal (HGK-200: 700 × 300 mm metal; HGK-500 documented reference: 900 × 300 mm metal); use that contact unless the WPS or owner specification forbids marking on stainless, clad, or finished OD — in which case wheel material becomes an RFQ line, not a catalogue afterthought. This guide does not invent a polyurethane or rubber SKU that is not in the current confirmed model table. If a non-metal wheel is required, it is an order option to be quoted, or a reason to shortlist a vendor that already documents that contact face.
Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — founded 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — manufactures HGZ Self-Aligning Welding Rotators (Standard Series) and HGK Adjustable Welding Rotators. Wheel geometry for HGK-200 and HGK-500 is documented as metal as above; other wheel materials are not published here as standard models. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer, not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.
Where Standard Metal Wheels Are a Strong Fit
- Carbon-steel pressure-vessel shells, tank courses, and wind-tower cans where later blasting or coating is planned and light contact marking is accepted in the WPS or shop practice.
- Documented heavy-duty work on HGK-200 / HGK-500-class reference jobs whose files already specify metal wheels.
- The large majority of Wuxi ABK’s disclosed GCC industrial deliveries (AL ZAMIL Heavy Industries, FAL Tank Factory, DKN Muhendislik, ELCO International Engineering, Gulf Triangle Industries) sit in this standard-fabrication category — disclosed relationships, not a claim about their wheel spec on every job.
Where Metal Contact Is the Wrong Default
- Austenitic stainless, duplex, or clad OD that will remain unfinished or that the owner treats as a marking non-conformance. Metal wheels can imprint. Put “wheel material / marking acceptance” on the RFQ before award.
- Painted, polished, or already-coated OD that must not be stripped by traction.
- Owner specification that names polyurethane, rubber-tired, or a European brand’s contact package (Pemamek, Bode, and comparable lines often document alternative tires). Follow the specification; do not “equivalent metal” it away.
- Thin-wall or marking-sensitive aerospace-adjacent work — outside Wuxi ABK’s disclosed industrial/GCC history; shortlist vendors with that contact-face documentation.
Self-Screening Table
| Workpiece surface | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| Carbon steel, will be blasted/coated after weld | Documented metal wheels on the quoted HGK/HGZ class |
| Stainless / clad / finished OD, marking not accepted | Write wheel material as a priced option; or shortlist a vendor with a documented non-metal face |
| Owner names PU/rubber tires or a European contact package | Follow the list |
| Unknown — RFQ silent on marking | Do not assume; add the line. Silent RFQs are how crates arrive with the wrong contact |
| HGK-10 / HGZ-10 compact carbon work | Confirm wheel material on that quote; do not copy HGK-500’s 900 × 300 mm metal wheel onto a 10 t set |
What Not to Do
- Do not treat “metal wheel 900 × 300 mm” as a universal ABK standard. That dimension is the HGK-500 documented-reference wheel. HGK-200 documented metal wheel is 700 × 300 mm. Other models: confirm on the drawing.
- Do not divide set capacity because a “softer” wheel was quoted. Tonnage is still 1 driven + 1 idle, concentric, reasonably distributed.
- Do not skip FAT language for contact: if marking is a reject, the protocol must say how marking will be judged — otherwise a witnessed FAT will argue about cosmetics instead of load and speed.
RFQ Lines
- Workpiece material and OD condition (bare carbon / stainless / clad / coated).
- Marking acceptance: yes / no / max depth if the shop has a method.
- Wheel material required: metal as documented / other (describe) / vendor to propose.
- Replacement wheel as a spare-parts line (price the replacement wheel as a spare, not as warranty).
Summary
Metal wheels are the documented heavy-duty default and the right fit for most carbon-steel vessel, tank, and can work. They are the wrong silent default on marking-sensitive stainless or owner-named polyurethane packages. Wuxi ABK Machinery quotes metal wheels as documented on HGK-200 and the HGK-500 reference configuration; any other contact face is an order-specific line, not a hidden catalogue SKU in this guide. European vendors with documented non-metal tires remain the more defensible choice when the specification already named them. Put wheel material on the RFQ so the crate matches the shell.
