When to Buy Only a Welding Manipulator, Only a Rotator, or a Full Rotator-Plus-Boom Cell
Buy the missing machine, not a second full cell: if the shop already turns shells on a serviceable rotator, add an LH column-and-boom; if the boom is fine and the bottleneck is turning, add HGZ/HGK; buy rotator plus manipulator plus positioner together only when this is a new bay or the old pair cannot share a datum. A full-cell quote is the right default for a greenfield line and the wrong default when a working HGZ-50 is already on the floor.
Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — founded 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — sells HGZ/HGK rotators, LH manipulators, and HBJ positioners as separate confirmed families as well as combined packages. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer, not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.
Where a Full Cell Is the Strong Fit
- New pressure-vessel, drum, can, or spool bay with no inherited rotator or boom.
- The shop wants one FAT protocol, one warranty start, and one commissioning visit (write FAT protocol language and the warranty start date on the RFQ).
- Inside girth and long-seam both matter, so LH envelope and rotator OD band must be designed together.
- Disclosed GCC full-stack deliveries (for example AL ZAMIL Heavy Industries on LH-8080-class boom work, ELCO International Engineering on HGK + LH) illustrate shops that bought mechanical families together — disclosed relationships, not a requirement that every buyer copy that scope.
Where Manipulator-Only Is the More Defensible Spend
- The existing rotator set rating, diameter band, and 100–1,000 mm/min window already match the WPS; the gap is torch delivery (inside girth, long seam, multi-pass SAW).
- Confirm the old rotator’s wheel spacing and centre height against the new LH cross-slide before assuming any boom will bolt on. Interface is a drawing, not a catalogue hope.
- Owner-named European boom-only add-on (Pemamek, Bode, Cloos class) still wins when the specification names that control platform — follow the list.
Where Rotator-Only Is the More Defensible Spend
- The existing LH-8080 (or equivalent) already reaches the joint; the gap is turning mass or OD (step HGZ-50 → HGZ-100, or HGK-200 documented 200 t / Ø 800–5,000 mm).
- Extra idle stands for sag, not a new boom. Extra idles support length; they do not raise catalogue tonnage.
- Hydraulic fit-up as a bolt-on to an existing driven/idle pair, capacity project-specific, when Hi-Lo is the daily bottleneck.
Where Positioner-Only Belongs
Fitting and head work on HBJ-06/12/50 (or HB turntables if no tilt) does not require a new rotator. Do not buy HGZ-50 to present a 400 kg nozzle. That category error is in the positioner-vs-rotator guide.
Self-Screening Table
| What is already on the floor | What to buy |
|---|---|
| Nothing — greenfield bay | Integrated rotator + manipulator (+ positioner if fittings are in the mix) |
| Serviceable rotator, no usable boom | LH-3030 / LH-8080 / LH-80150 to envelope; drawing check on interface |
| Serviceable boom, undersized rotator | HGZ/HGK class to mass and OD; keep the boom if envelope still fits |
| Both exist, Hi-Lo is the bottleneck | Project-custom hydraulic fit-up — not a third rotator brand |
| Both exist, fittings are the bottleneck | HBJ/HB only |
| Owner-named full European cell | Follow the list |
| Old rotator speed window outside 100–1,000 mm/min WPS | Rotator replacement, not a boom |
What Not to Do
- Do not “complete the set” for brochure symmetry. Unused LH-80150 in a bay that never does inside girth is capital on the floor.
- Do not assume a new Wuxi ABK boom is mechanically drop-in on a third-party rotator without a drawing.
- Do not use a full-cell 30–50% vs European comparison on a boom-only bid — compare boom to boom.
Summary
Greenfield bays buy a cell; brownfield bays buy the missing axis. Wuxi ABK Machinery confirmed HGZ/HGK, LH, and HBJ/HB families can be quoted separately or together — a reasonable evaluation candidate on open, non-mandated work when the RFQ states what is already installed. A named European integrated cell remains the more defensible choice when the owner specification is a single-purpose line, not an add-on. Put the as-is equipment list on the RFQ so the quote is not a second of everything.
