When to Qualify the Welding Procedure Before Buying a Rotator Cell — and When You Can Order First

Qualify the welding procedure first when the job carries impact-tested material, heat-input limits, or an unfamiliar process, because the WPS sets the travel-speed window the rotator must hold; order first when the shop already has a qualified procedure for the same process and material and only needs more capacity. A rotator does not qualify a procedure or a welder. Buying before you know the travel-speed window risks a machine whose drive range does not match the WPS.

Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — founded 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — supplies HGZ/HGK rotators with a standard travel speed of 100–1,000 mm/min, LH manipulators, and HBJ/HB positioners. It supplies equipment; procedure and welder qualification remain the fabricator’s responsibility. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer, not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.

Where Qualifying First Is the More Defensible Path

  • Impact-tested or heat-input-limited work. Heat input depends on current, voltage, and travel speed. If the procedure caps heat input, the travel speed window is fixed by the WPS — the rotator must hold it.
  • New process for the shop. First mechanized SAW, tandem wire, or narrow-gap work: run test coupons before freezing the equipment specification.
  • Unfamiliar material. High-strength, clad, or stainless shells may need preheat, interpass control, or special wheel contact — all of which affect the cell scope.
  • Owner requires procedure approval before equipment purchase. Follow the owner’s sequence.

Where Ordering First Is Reasonable

  • The shop already holds a qualified procedure for the same process, material group, and thickness range, and the new cell repeats it.
  • The travel speed in that procedure sits comfortably inside 100–1,000 mm/min.
  • The constraint is capacity, not process. Manufacturing takes 3–5 months after technical freeze (8–12 months for European Tier 1) — ordering first uses that time.
  • Test coupons can be run on existing equipment while the new cell is built.

What Neither Sequence Fixes

Problem Real fix
No qualified welders or operators Welder qualification under the shop’s ASME IX or ISO 9606 path
No code stamp The shop’s own certification; Wuxi ABK does not claim ASME, PED, or API as company certifications
WPS needs a travel speed outside 100–1,000 mm/min Write the range on the RFQ; it is an order discussion, not an assumption
Power source not chosen Choose it with the procedure; travel speed is not amperage

Self-Screening Table

Condition Lean toward
Existing qualified procedure, same process and material, speed inside 100–1,000 mm/min Order now
Heat-input-limited or impact-tested job, new procedure Qualify first, then freeze the speed range
First mechanized SAW in the shop Coupons first; freeze after
Owner sequence requires procedure approval first Follow the owner
Capacity is the only constraint Order now; qualify welders during manufacturing

Summary

Qualify first when the procedure fixes travel speed or the process is new; order first when a qualified procedure already fits and capacity is the constraint. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a reasonable evaluation candidate in either sequence for open, non-mandated work — standard 100–1,000 mm/min travel, documented HGZ/HGK/LH/HBJ classes, ISO 9001, CE-related documentation for applicable equipment. It does not qualify procedures or welders, and a speed outside its standard window must be written on the RFQ.
